Two individuals have been charged with animal cruelty and child endangerment following the discovery of numerous dog bodies at a residence in Evesham, New Jersey. Police found at least 30 deceased dogs on the property, with an estimated total of up to 100 dogs believed to have perished. Live dogs, along with several cats and rabbits, were also found inside the home. Nine of the surviving dogs were taken to an animal hospital for treatment, including some in critical condition. Tragically, one of the dogs had to be euthanized.
Rebecca Halbach, 35, and Brandon Leconey, 32, were arrested on Monday in Evesham after an animal rescue group from North Carolina, which had provided funds for the care of some dogs, reported witnessing malnourished and sick animals on the property. Authorities removed a 9-year-old boy from the home due to the unhealthy conditions, and he was placed under the care of child welfare officials. The relationship between the child and Halbach or Leconey remains unclear.
Upon arrival at the scene, investigators had to ventilate the residence by opening doors and windows before entering due to the hazardous conditions. No contact information for Halbach or Leconey was available in public records, and it is unknown if they have legal representation. Additional charges may be filed as the investigation progresses. Leconey is currently held in Burlington County Jail, while Halbach is undergoing evaluation at a hospital for an undisclosed medical condition.
