Trump’s Lawyers Request Recusal of Judge in Criminal Case

Attorneys representing former President Donald Trump have filed a motion to recuse U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan from presiding over his latest criminal case. The motion cites Chutkan’s previous references to Trump in other criminal cases related to the January 6th Capitol riot. Trump had previously criticized the judge on social media, claiming he could not receive a fair trial. However, the judge’s comments in the other case were accurate and fair. Legal experts suggest that the recusal request is more for Trump’s base than an expectation of success.

In a separate filing, Trump’s legal defense team has attempted to get charges against him dismissed in the Georgia election interference case. The motion adopts arguments previously made by Trump’s co-defendants, who are accused of violating Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. The charges stem from alleged efforts to overturn Trump’s 2020 election loss in the state. The likelihood of success for this filing is considered low.

Trump, in an online statement, expressed his intention to use the upcoming legal proceedings to present evidence supporting his claims of election fraud. However, he did not provide any details or explain why the evidence has not been presented before.
