Karina Holmer had come to the United States to work as an au pair for two children in Dover, Mass. On June 21, 1996, Holmer had spent the night drinking at Club Zanzibar near Fenway Park in Boston. At 2 a.m. one of the bar’s employees noticed Holmer, 20, passed out on a table. A bartender asked him to help her get a cab. When he returned from a quick trip to the back of the bar, Holmer was gone.
On June 23, the 20-year-old was found by a homeless man looking through a dumpster off Boylston Street. The dumpster was a little more than a mile from the club. Part of her body was inside a trash bag. The lower half of her body was missing. Police determined she had been strangled and then dismembered.
Holmer’s murder remains unsolved.
