On Feb. 2, 2018, Gloria Satterfield, the longtime housekeeper and nanny for prominent South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh, tripped over the family dogs and fell at the Murdaugh family hunting estate in Islandton, SC. On Feb. 26, Satterfield, 57, died from her injuries, which included “multiple rib fractures, a pulmonary contusion, and a subdural hematoma.”

Satterfield had worked for the Murdaughs for more than two decades. Her death was never reported to the coroner and no autopsy was performed. Murdaugh collected a $4.3 million insurance claim for Satterfield’s death. He told Satterfield’s sons he would give them the money, but he never did.

Three years later, Murdaugh shot and killed his wife and son on the property. In 2023, he was convicted of their murders and sentenced to life in prison. Authorities in South Carolina are now exhuming Satterfield’s body to determine exactly what happened to her.
