Daylenn Pua, an 18-year-old student at Ke Kula O’Ehunuikaimalino, a Hawaiian immersion school, was visiting Oahu when he disappeared on Feb. 27, 2015. Pua was last seen boarding a bus in Waianae. He told his grandmother he was going to hike the Haiku Stairs, which are also known as the “stairway to heaven.” The stairs are part of a former U.S. Navy installation that form a treacherous trail, which is closed to the public. Pua’s grandmother told him this, but he ignored her warnings.
At 11 a.m., he texted pictures of himself on the trail to his family. This would be the last communication they would receive from him. When he did not return home that afternoon, Pua’s grandmother reported him missing. A search involving the fire department, volunteers, drones, and the Navy ensued, but no trace of Pua has ever been found. It is speculated he fell from the trail and died. However, he officially remains missing.
