Tag: Murdered

Cobey Smith was walking between Sterling School and his home in the Heritage apartment complex in Greenville, SC, on Jan. 25, 2015, when someone called him into the nearby woods. Smith, 16, a freshman at Wade Hampton High School, was on the Sliding Rock Creek greenway trail when his mother and brother discovered his body. He was shot around 10 p.m. and still alive when his family found him. Smith reportedly died in his brother’s arms as they waited for help.

The case was unsolved for more than six years. In April 2021, Christopher Dendy Jr., Jayveon Sanders, and Tyler Johnson were arrested and charged with killing Smith, and with possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The arrest warrant implicated Dendy as the person who shot Smith. The murder weapon has not been recovered. The three men are in custody awaiting trial.
