Trial Begins for Jennifer Crumbley, Mother of Oxford High School Shooter

The trial for Jennifer Crumbley, the mother of the Oxford High School shooter, has commenced in Oakland County, Michigan. Jennifer and her husband, James Crumbley, are facing charges of involuntary manslaughter in connection with their alleged role leading up to the tragic incident. Their son, Ethan Crumbley, carried out the worst school shooting in Michigan’s history on November 30, 2021, resulting in the deaths of four students and injuries to seven others.

Prosecutors argue that the Crumbleys made a gun accessible to their son and ignored his alleged mental health issues. They claim that the parents disregarded warning signs and failed to address their son’s troubling behavior. Four days before the shooting, James Crumbley purchased a gun for Ethan, and Jennifer took him to a shooting range, documenting the outing on Instagram.

Furthermore, prosecutors point to additional missed warning signs. The day before the shooting, the school informed Jennifer Crumbley that Ethan had been looking at ammunition on his phone. Just hours before the incident, the parents were called to the school after their son had drawn violent images and expressed distressing thoughts. The parents were advised to enroll Ethan in counseling, but they declined to take him home from school that day, leaving after only 30 minutes.

Ethan Crumbley, who was 15 years old at the time of the shooting, was sentenced to multiple life sentences without parole in December 2021. During his sentencing, he took full responsibility for his actions but defended his parents, stating that they were unaware of his plans.

More than 200 people appeared for jury selection at the Oakland County court as Jennifer Crumbley’s trial began. The Crumbleys have been held in jail for over two years without bail since being charged shortly after the shooting. James Crumbley’s trial is scheduled for March.

The trial of Jennifer Crumbley marks a rare case in which parents are being held accountable for their alleged role leading up to a mass school shooting in the United States.
