Tragic Infant Twins’ Alleged Murder by Trusted Babysitter Shocks Pittsburgh Community

The Pittsburgh community is reeling from the tragic death of 6-week-old Leon Katz, allegedly at the hands of a trusted family friend and babysitter. Leon’s bubbly smile, captured in now heartbreaking photos, serves as a painful reminder of the innocence lost. The devastating incident occurred on Father’s Day, leaving Leon’s parents, Ethan Katz and Savannah Roberts, grappling with an unbearable loss.

Leon’s parents had entrusted him and his twin brother, Ari, to the care of Nicole Virzi, a family friend and a fifth-year Ph.D. candidate in Clinical Psychology. On that fateful day, while rushing Ari to the hospital due to a mysterious injury, the couple left Leon in Virzi’s care. Virzi later claimed that Leon had fallen out of his bouncer chair while she briefly stepped away to retrieve a bottle.

However, medical professionals examining Leon’s injuries found them to be consistent with child abuse, rather than accidental trauma. Authorities subsequently arrested Virzi on charges of homicide, child endangerment, and aggravated assault. She is currently being held without bail at the Allegheny County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday. Virzi vehemently denies the allegations.

The couple’s friends have rallied around them, setting up a GoFundMe page to help alleviate the significant financial burdens they now face. The funds raised will be used to cover funeral expenses, medical bills resulting from injuries sustained by both Leon and Ari, essential baby supplies, and relocation costs as the family navigates this difficult time.

Nicole Virzi is believed to be the daughter of renowned Mount Sinai cardiologist, Peter J. Virzi. When contacted, a family member declined to comment, expressing their disapproval of the inquiry.

David Shrager, Virzi’s attorney, maintains her innocence, emphasizing her loving nature and long-term friendship with the affected family. He points out her lack of criminal history and expresses eagerness to present their case in court.

The tragic death of Leon Katz has deeply impacted the Pittsburgh community, occurring on a day that should have been a joyous celebration for his father’s first Father’s Day and the parents’ first wedding anniversary. The loss of this innocent life serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of children and the importance of ensuring their safety.
