Top Military Leaders Report Plan to Police, Threaten Arrest of Bolsonaro if Executed

Top military leaders in Brazil have alleged that former President Jair Bolsonaro presented them with a plan to reverse the results of the 2022 presidential election, according to court documents released on Friday. The filings provide evidence of Bolsonaro’s direct involvement in an effort to subvert the vote, which he narrowly lost to left-wing candidate Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The documents contain testimony from former army commander Marco Antonio Freire Gomes and former air force commander Brigadier Carlos de Almeida Baptista Junior. Both commanders stated that they refused to accept Bolsonaro’s plan and warned him that any attempt to overturn the election results could lead to his arrest.

According to the federal police report included in the court filings, Bolsonaro held unscheduled meetings at the presidential palace after the second round of voting in 2022. During one of these gatherings, Bolsonaro expressed his desire to create a commission to investigate the confirmation and legality of the electoral process. He also mentioned the possibility of using a decree to call for a state of siege to further scrutinize the elections.

Gomes informed federal police that he repeatedly emphasized to Bolsonaro that, given the circumstances at the time, there was no military possibility to reverse the election result. Baptista Junior also confirmed that Gomes’s rejection played a crucial role in preventing Bolsonaro from pursuing his efforts further. The court filings state that Gomes warned Bolsonaro that he would have to arrest the president if such a move was attempted.

These revelations come as Bolsonaro faces multiple investigations before Brazil’s Supreme Court, including one examining his potential involvement in a 2023 attack on key government buildings shortly after Lula’s inauguration. In February, police confiscated Bolsonaro’s passport during raids, following a court order that revealed he had received a draft decree prepared by his aides in November 2022, which aimed to overturn the election results and issue arrest warrants for Supreme Court Justices Alexandre de Moraes and Gilmar Mendes, as well as Senate leader Rodrigo Pacheco.

It is important to note that Bolsonaro has already been deemed ineligible to run for office until 2030 by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court due to spreading false claims about the election and misusing public funds for that purpose.

Investigators are also continuing to search for any connections between Bolsonaro and the riots that occurred on January 8, 2023, which resulted in the destruction of government buildings in the capital city of Brasilia.
