Newly released video footage captures the arrest of Joseph Iniguez, the current No. 2 prosecutor in Los Angeles and a top aide to District Attorney George Gascon, during a traffic stop in 2021. The incident occurred when police pulled over Iniguez and his then-fiance for a suspected traffic violation while they were returning home from a wedding.
Iniguez, who was riding in the passenger seat, can be heard in the video asserting that the officers had pulled over the wrong person. He also urged them to check his license plates, which would have revealed his affiliation with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Iniguez repeatedly advised his fiance not to speak with the officers and emphasized that field sobriety tests were voluntary and not required by law.
Under California law, prosecutors are prohibited from assisting in the defense of any suspected criminals. Despite this, Iniguez’s actions during the encounter raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest.
Following the arrest of his fiance, an officer approached Iniguez and arrested him as well, citing public intoxication. Additional video footage shows Iniguez at the jail, although no audio is available.
In a separate case involving Gascon’s office, another top aide named Diana Teran is facing an 11-count felony indictment. Teran is accused of improperly accessing Brady material against Los Angeles sheriff’s deputies while working for the sheriff’s office and then using that information at the district attorney’s office. Gascon, who campaigned on an anti-police platform, employed Teran as part of his team.
The Association of Deputy District Attorneys, the county prosecutors’ union, has filed a lawsuit in 2022 naming both Iniguez and Teran. The lawsuit alleges that they ordered subordinates to break the law.
