Three teenage girls involved in a carjacking incident in New Orleans, which resulted in the dragging death of a 73-year-old woman, pleaded guilty on Monday to reduced charges and were subsequently sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The trio faced charges of attempted manslaughter in connection with the death of Linda Frickey, 73. Meanwhile, a fourth suspect, now 18 years old, still faces a second-degree murder charge, which carries a potential life sentence.

Originally scheduled for trial on Monday, the guilty pleas from the three girls led to their sentencing. Jury selection for the remaining suspect, who prosecutors allege was driving the vehicle when Frickey lost her life, commenced after the guilty pleas were entered.

All four suspects were charged as adults in the March 2022 killing, with ages ranging from 15 to 17 at the time. Authorities determined that Frickey died from blunt force injuries when she became entangled in a seatbelt as the carjackers fled with her vehicle on the afternoon of March 21. Tragically, she was dragged while neighbors looked on helplessly.

Following the hearing, members of Frickey’s family spoke with reporters about statements made by two of the defendants. Jinny Frickey, the victim’s sister, expressed her perspective, saying, “When they were saying they were sorry, I’m sure they were because you go back, hindsight, a lot of times, you are sorry for the actions you completed. But you did it. And, unfortunately, they did it and they have to serve the time.”

During the hearing, one of the defendants, tearfully and with visible remorse, spoke about the incident, saying, “That’s not what we set out to do, and I hope that you all can forgive me.” Her expression of regret was noted in an account of the hearing published in The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate.

The District Attorney Jason Williams’s office refrained from commenting on the case until its conclusion. However, the office issued a statement acknowledging the Frickey family’s remarkable grace in response to the defendants’ expressions of responsibility. The statement expressed ongoing support for the Frickey family and a commitment to pursuing justice in honor of Linda Frickey’s memory.
