Johnifer Dernard Barnwell, 37, one of the four men who escaped from a Georgia jail in October, was apprehended Sunday morning in Augusta, as confirmed by both local and federal authorities. Barnwell, who was originally detained on drug charges, was found in a residence where authorities also discovered significant quantities of drugs.
The escape occurred on October 16, when Barnwell and three other inmates managed to break free from the jail by exploiting a damaged window and cutting through a fence.
The search is still ongoing for Joey Fournier, 52, the last of the escapees, who was incarcerated on a murder charge related to the 2022 death of his ex-girlfriend.
Earlier, Chavis Demaryo Stokes, 29, was recaptured on October 26, and Marc Kerry Anderson, 25, was apprehended on November 3. Surveillance footage from the day of the jailbreak revealed a blue Dodge Challenger near the facility hours prior to the escape. Additionally, the footage indicated an individual tampering with the fence and subsequently placing items within the enclosed perimeter, which authorities suspect were instrumental in facilitating the inmates’ escape.
