A Texas man from a law enforcement family, Juan Campos, 28, was arrested upon the arrival of the Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas cruise ship at Port Everglades in Florida. The arrest followed allegations made by a 20-year-old woman who claimed that Campos raped her onboard the vessel on August 28.
According to an arrest report obtained by Local 10 News, the accuser stated that Campos penetrated her against her will with an unknown object. She further mentioned that she pushed him away, asked him to stop, and expressed that it was painful. The report also indicated that Campos allegedly attempted to force her into performing oral sex and tried to penetrate her again when his initial attempt failed.
Campos’ attorney, Ed Hoeg, asserted that the sexual encounter was consensual and that his client ceased his actions upon the woman’s request. Hoeg stated that Campos was on a regular cruise with friends, where they met other individuals on board. He emphasized that the situation escalated during a make-out session but ended when the woman verbally expressed her desire to stop.
Campos, originally from Houston and hailing from a law enforcement family, has no prior criminal record. His family, shocked by the rape allegations, expressed their disbelief, according to Hoeg.
Following his removal from the ship at Port Everglades, Campos remains in custody at the Broward County Main Jail. A judge granted him a $20,000 bond.
This incident comes in the wake of a recent ruling where a woman was awarded over $12 million in a legal battle against Carnival Cruise Line. The woman accused a Carnival crew member, Fredy Anggara, of raping her during a trip in 2018. Anggara, who was never arrested or listed as a defendant in the case, allegedly lured the woman into a closet, locked the door, and sexually assaulted her aboard the Carnival Miracle on December 1, 2018.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, jurors initially awarded the victim $10 million in 2022. After Carnival contested the verdict, Judge Kathleen Williams added an additional $2 million to the compensation.
