Tennessee Police Officer Fatally Shoots Knife-Wielding Robbery Suspect in Deli

In Murfreesboro, Tennessee, newly released bodycam footage captures a police officer fatally shooting 44-year-old Steven James Murphy, who attempted to rob an armored car employee and later charged at the officer with knives. The incident, which took place around 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, prompted an immediate police response.

According to the Murfreesboro Police Department, the situation began when Murphy tried to rob a worker refilling cash in an ATM. Confronted by the worker, who drew a gun, Murphy fled into a nearby deli. Murfreesboro Police spokesperson Larry Flowers detailed these events in a news conference.

The bodycam video shows Officer Adam Claiborne entering the deli and encountering Murphy behind the counter. Murphy, armed with knives in both hands and held above his head, charged at Claiborne. The officer can be heard in the video commanding Murphy to drop the knives before discharging several shots.

Murphy was critically injured in the shooting and later died from his wounds at a hospital. No other injuries were reported among the officer, the armored car worker, or the six deli employees present during the incident.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the shooting. This case adds to the ongoing national discourse on police responses to armed suspects and the use of lethal force. The bodycam footage is expected to play a crucial role in the investigation, providing detailed insights into the officer’s actions and the circumstances leading to the fatal shooting.
