A tragic incident occurred at the St. Helena College and Career Academy in Greensburg, Louisiana, resulting in the death of a teenager and the arrest of a suspect. The shooting took place on Tuesday at approximately 3:30 p.m., according to authorities. Joe Chaney, chief of operations with the St. Helena Parish Sheriff’s Office, confirmed that one student was killed and two others were hospitalized. The condition of the injured students is currently unknown.
The victim has been identified as 16-year-old Vernon Gordon Jr., who was a football player at the school. A juvenile suspect has been taken into custody by the sheriff’s office, and the motive behind the shooting is still under investigation.
In response to the incident, the St. Helena Parish School District announced on Facebook that classes have been canceled until Friday, along with the cancellation of the upcoming football game and School Board meeting. Grief counselors will be available for students when they return on Friday.
Louisiana State Police are assisting the sheriff’s office at the scene as the investigation continues.
