Teenager Arrested in Connection with Large Shooting in North Salt Lake

A teenager, Joe Damien Wade Hernandez, has been arrested in connection with a large shooting incident in North Salt Lake City. The North Salt Lake City Police Department charged Hernandez, 19, with felony discharge of a firearm and reckless endangerment.

According to the North Salt Lake City Police Department, officers responded to a “shots fired” call at a high-density apartment complex on Sunday, Sept. 3. The scene was described as “large,” with two groups of shooters firing in opposite directions. Numerous rounds entered apartments, posing a significant risk to residents.

During the investigation, officers discovered over 55 shell casings in the parking lot area. Hernandez and two male juveniles were located and detained. In a post-Miranda interview, Hernandez claimed that he had handled a gun but did not fire it. He alleged that the two juvenile males with him were responsible for the shooting.

Hernandez stated that one of the juveniles had a conflict with individuals at a party. According to Hernandez, the first juvenile encountered a white male who displayed a gun and began shooting. In response, the first juvenile fired back. Hernandez then informed the second juvenile about the situation, prompting the second juvenile to exit the vehicle and also start shooting.

The two juveniles attempted to flee the scene in a vehicle, which was later found to contain two firearms underneath each of their seats. The juveniles were booked into juvenile detention, while Hernandez was booked into the Davis County Jail on charges of felony discharge of a firearm and reckless endangerment.
