Teen Arrested for Assault and Robbery of Elderly Woman Outside Queens Church

A 16-year-old boy has been apprehended by authorities on Thursday for the brutal assault and robbery of a 68-year-old woman outside St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Briarwood, Queens. The incident occurred over the weekend, and the teenager now faces multiple charges, including robbery and assault.

Surveillance footage captured the disturbing attack, showing the young assailant forcefully pushing the victim, identified as Irene Tahliambouris, down the church steps. While she lay on the ground, he callously snatched her purse, which contained cash, a cell phone, and a credit card. To make matters worse, he then fled the scene in her 2006 Nissan Altima.

The identity of the teenage suspect has not been disclosed due to his status as a minor. However, he has also been charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.

In response to the arrest, a relative of the victim, Daniel Coffaro Hill, expressed relief in a social media post on Thursday evening. He also urged lawmakers to take a tougher stance on crime, emphasizing the need for legal reforms to ensure that criminals are held accountable for their actions.

Tahliambouris remains in critical condition and is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital, as stated by her family on a GoFundMe page. Following the incident, law enforcement authorities have increased patrols around the church to provide reassurance to the parishioners.

Father Konstantinos Kalogridis, a representative of the church, previously expressed shock and concern over the incident, stating that such occurrences are rare in the area. The attack has left the community fearful, angry, and saddened by the suffering endured by the victim.
