Teacher Surrenders Blue Card Amidst Multiple Indecent Treatment Charges

A shocking case has emerged from Southport Magistrates Court, where Hayley Maree Cassell, a teacher facing a barrage of charges related to the indecent treatment of a child, has voluntarily surrendered her blue card as part of her bail conditions, according to court documents. The accused, accompanied by her lawyer Thomas McKee, hurriedly left the court premises without speaking to waiting media.

Ms. Cassell, a resident of Hope Island, attracted the attention of investigators from the Gold Coast Child Protection and Investigation Unit following a complaint lodged several months ago. The 32-year-old now faces a staggering 74 counts of indecent treatment of a child under the age of 16, in addition to charges of grooming, breaching privacy through observations or recordings, and attempting to pervert justice.

Court documents reveal that the alleged offenses occurred across various locations in the Gold Coast, including Mermaid Waters, Burleigh Heads, Palm Beach, and Varsity Lakes. Another indecent treatment crime is said to have taken place in Brisbane, Australia.

The grooming charge against Ms. Cassell is said to have transpired between January 27, 2015, and July 28, 2016. The charge alleges that during this period, she knowingly engaged with a person under 16 years of age with the intention to facilitate their participation in a sexual act.

Additionally, she is accused of making a false statement under oath during a judicial proceeding on July 10, 2017, resulting in the charge of attempting to pervert justice.

To comply with her bail conditions, Ms. Cassell has already handed over her passport and blue card. Furthermore, she is required to reside at her Hope Island address, regularly report to the police in Coomera, and is strictly prohibited from unsupervised contact, directly or indirectly, with any child under the age of 16.

During the court hearing, Mr. McKee, the defense lawyer, requested an adjournment for the release of the brief of evidence. Six weeks was deemed an appropriate timeframe for the disclosure. He also sought an amendment to Ms. Cassell’s bail undertaking, suggesting that she should only be required to report to the police once a week.

The court approved the continuation of bail for Ms. Cassell, and the next hearing is scheduled for September 28. Surprisingly, she was excused from personal appearance on this occasion.
