Synagogue and Jewish Community Center in Montreal Targeted in Attempted Firebomb Attacks

A synagogue and a Jewish community center in Montreal, Canada, were targeted by attempted firebomb attacks this week, according to community groups. The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) reported that an attempted firebombing occurred at a center in West Island and at Congregation Beth Tikvah in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, a suburb of Montreal. Both incidents took place overnight on Monday. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either attack, and the damage was minor.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his concern over the attempted arson, calling it “deeply disturbing” and emphasizing that antisemitism is unacceptable. The CIJA echoed this sentiment, stating that antisemitism must be condemned and the perpetrators held accountable. The organization also mentioned that Montreal Police are aware of the incident and are currently investigating.

Yair Szlak, the president and CEO of Federation CJA, which oversees Montreal’s Jewish community center, expressed relief that no one was hurt but expressed anger over the violence. Eta Yudin, vice-president of CIJA—Quebec, highlighted that there have been over a dozen alleged hate crimes against Jews and more than 25 “hateful incidents” since the Israel-Hamas conflict began a month ago. She noted the importation of the conflict into local communities.

These incidents in Montreal come amidst a backdrop of rising tensions between Jewish and Muslim communities during the Israel-Gaza war. Recent events include the death of a 69-year-old Jewish man during pro-Israel and pro-Palestine protests in California, a Cornell University student charged with making violent antisemitic threats, and the University of Pennsylvania reporting “vile, disturbing antisemitic emails” targeting Jewish students. Additionally, an Arab Muslim student at Stanford University was hospitalized in a hit-and-run incident currently under investigation as a hate crime.
