Suspected serial killer Rex Heuermann has been removed from suicide watch at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility. Heuermann, an architect from Massapequa Park, was charged in the cold case murders of several women whose bodies were discovered along Long Island’s Gilgo Beach. He had been placed under suicide watch and evaluated by the county’s mental health team. Although his housing and security protocols remain unchanged, he is still being held under extra precautions.
The change in Heuermann’s suicide watch status was revealed during a special show on the Investigation Discovery network hosted by Nancy Grace. Heuermann has been charged with three counts of first- and second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Lynn Costello, and Megan Waterman. The bodies of these three women were found along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo State Park in December 2010. Heuermann is also considered the prime suspect in the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
Authorities identified Heuermann as a suspect after discovering his vehicle registration matched that of a dark green Chevrolet Avalanche previously linked to the unidentified killer. Heuermann has denied the allegations. He is scheduled to appear in court on August 15.
