The victim of the shooting has been identified as 73-year-old Donald Lucero. The pursuit began at Silver Brook and Washington in West Bend and concluded approximately a mile away. Eyewitnesses reported hearing consecutive gunshots, prompting them to look outside their windows. The incident took place near Lake Winnie County Park. The victim managed to drive to a nearby dentist’s office, where he received immediate medical attention that potentially saved his life.
According to the Winnebago County Police Chief, the road rage incident escalated at the park, where the victim was shot four times after a verbal altercation. Initial reports suggest that the suspect may have been tailgating the victim, leading to the confrontation.
Police were able to obtain video footage from nearby sources, which helped identify the suspect’s vehicle. A few hours later, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department contacted the West Bend Police Department to investigate an address associated with the suspected shooter. Officers responded to the location near Silver Brook and Washington and found the suspect outside in the parking lot.
Instead of cooperating with the police, the suspect fled the scene, heading west and then turning north on US 45. However, the pursuit was short-lived as the suspect’s vehicle crashed into a tree line not far from the initial location. The suspect, who was the individual being sought by Winnebago County Police, was found deceased in the crashed vehicle. The cause of his death is yet to be determined.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is now investigating the pursuit that occurred in West Bend, as it resulted in a fatality. Autopsy examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death for the suspect. The suspect, identified as Donald Lucero, was a resident of Winnebago County.
