Suspected Drug Dealer Arrested in Connection with Fatal Fentanyl Overdose

Marin County sheriff’s investigators have apprehended a suspected drug dealer believed to be responsible for a fatal fentanyl overdose. The arrest was announced by the Marin County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday. According to Sheriff’s Sgt. Adam Schermerhorn, the suspect is accused of supplying fentanyl to two women who experienced overdoses on August 26. The victims were transported by the suspect to Novato Community Hospital, where one tragically succumbed to the overdose, while the other was placed in a medically induced coma.

After conducting a thorough investigation, sheriff’s investigators determined that the suspect was the source of the fentanyl that led to the fatal overdose, Sgt. Schermerhorn confirmed. The individual in question, identified as 34-year-old Callen Sheffler from Santa Rosa, was apprehended at his residence on Saturday. He now faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and transporting or selling narcotics. Sheffler was subsequently released from the Marin County Jail after posting bail.

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid known to be 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times stronger than heroin, has become a significant public health concern. Dr. Matthew Willis, the public health officer for Marin County, revealed that there were 17 confirmed fentanyl-related deaths in the county last year. In response, the county’s health department has been actively working to educate residents about the risks associated with fentanyl and connecting substance users to treatment.
