A suspect has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a bicyclist in South Los Angeles. The suspect, identified as Felipe Avalos, 66, was taken into custody in Compton and booked on a charge of gross vehicular manslaughter, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).
The collision occurred on Tuesday morning at approximately 8:45 a.m. in the area of Broadway and 117th Street. Investigators stated that the driver of an older model Chevy van ran over the bicyclist and dragged him for about one mile before the victim became dislodged at the intersection of Broadway and El Segundo Boulevard. The driver of the van fled the scene.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. LAPD detectives obtained a possible license plate of the suspect’s vehicle during witness interviews. Following a series of follow-ups, the suspect’s van was located parked in the driveway of a residence in Compton.
Law enforcement officials monitored the van and observed a man matching the description of the driver leaving the residence and entering the van. Avalos was subsequently taken into custody without incident. The exact timing of his arrest was not immediately clear. Avalos is currently being held on a $50,000 bond.
The investigation into the hit-and-run incident is ongoing, and further details have not been released at this time.
