Suspect Arrested for Robbery, Grand Theft, and Arson in Connection with Israeli Flag Burning Incident

El Cerrito police have apprehended a 36-year-old Hayward man suspected of committing a series of crimes during a protest held in January. The suspect allegedly pushed a woman to the ground from behind, forcibly took away an Israeli flag she was holding, and proceeded to burn it. The incident occurred during a demonstration against the Israel-Hamas war, which took place at the intersection of San Pablo Avenue and Carlson Boulevard on January 6.

Authorities took the suspect into custody on Wednesday at approximately 7 a.m. The arrest was made at an undisclosed location while police were executing a search warrant at the suspect’s residence. During the operation, additional evidence linking the suspect to the crime was recovered.

The man has been arrested on charges of robbery, grand theft from a person, and arson. As of early Thursday, he remains in custody at the county jail in Martinez, with bail set at $115,000.

The protest in question saw opposing groups gather in El Cerrito. One faction, protesting against the Israeli attack on Gaza, occupied the intersection, while pro-Israeli demonstrators assembled on a nearby sidewalk. The suspect, whose face was concealed during the incident, was identified with the assistance of the public.
