Police in Gainesville, Florida, have apprehended a suspect who stole a large excavator and intentionally crashed it into a Walmart store. The incident occurred on September 11, according to the Gainesville Police Department’s Facebook post. The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Jesse Charles Smith, allegedly hotwired the excavator after discovering it at a nearby construction site. Smith then proceeded to drive through a storage unit and knock down multiple utility poles before crashing into the Walmart.
After crashing through one of the store’s walls, Smith entered the Walmart carrying a machete. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident. Smith has been charged with grand theft, criminal mischief, armed trespassing, and resisting arrest without violence. He is currently being held at a Gainesville jail awaiting trial, as indicated by inmate records from Alachua County.
