Substitute Teacher Arrested on Child Sex Assault and Abuse Charges

Arvada police have apprehended Justin Joshua Martinez, a 30-year-old substitute teacher and after-school worker, on charges of child sex assault and child abuse. Martinez was taken into custody on Wednesday following allegations of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, as well as misdemeanor child abuse. The charges against him include a felony assault charge, indicating that the victim was under the age of 15 and that the abuse was part of a recurring pattern.

According to a news release by the Arvada police, Martinez had been employed in the before- and after-school programs at Red Rocks Elementary School in Morrison. He had been working in the school district since 2011, serving as a substitute teacher and participating in after-school programs at various elementary schools in Arvada, Wheat Ridge, and Lakewood. The schools where Martinez had worked include Lawrence, Stevens, Vivian, Swanson, Secrest, and West Woods.

Martinez is currently being held in custody at the Jefferson County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
