Spanish soccer star Jennifer Hermoso has filed a sexual assault complaint against Luis Rubiales, the head of Spain’s soccer federation, according to prosecutors.
The complaint stems from an unsolicited kiss Rubiales gave Hermoso during a medal ceremony following Spain’s victory over England in the World Cup final in Australia last month. Prosecutors in Spain are now able to open a case against Rubiales, who has faced significant criticism since the incident.
Sexual assault is punishable by one to four years in prison in Spain. The first phase of the case is expected to begin in a few days. Rubiales has defended his conduct, claiming that Hermoso initiated the exchange, while Hermoso maintains that she did not consent to the kiss.
Rubiales has resisted calls to resign from the Spanish Soccer Federation and has been suspended from all soccer-related activity for 90 days by FIFA. The incident has sparked a broader debate over sexism in sport, particularly in Spain.
