South Korean Actor O Yeong-su Convicted of Sexual Harassment in “Squid Game” Case

South Korean actor O Yeong-su, known for his role as Oh II-nam in the popular Netflix series “Squid Game,” has been convicted of sexual harassment. The Seongnam branch of the Suwon District Court handed down a suspended prison sentence of eight months, along with a requirement for O to attend a 40-hour sexual violence treatment program. The court’s decision comes after O was charged with two counts of sexual harassment in 2017, which he had vehemently denied.

O, who is 79 years old, expressed his intention to appeal the ruling as he left the court. He has a seven-day window to file an appeal; otherwise, the decision will be upheld. Prosecutors had initially sought a one-year prison sentence for O, according to media reports.

Womenlink, a women’s rights group in South Korea, welcomed the court’s ruling and called on O to apologize to the victim. The group highlighted the similarities between O’s case and previous instances of sexual violence in the theater industry, where offenders attempted to mask their actions as “favors” or “friendship.”

O’s conviction has had repercussions on his career, as he has dropped out of an upcoming film in South Korea. Prior to this incident, O had achieved recognition for his portrayal of Oh II-nam in “Squid Game,” winning the Best Supporting Actor in television at the 2022 Golden Globes. This made him the first South Korean actor to receive the prestigious award.
