Sixth Inmate Dies at Atlanta’s Fulton County Jail, Prompting Investigation

Another inmate has died at Atlanta’s Fulton County Jail, marking the sixth inmate death in six weeks and the tenth this year at the facility. The inmate, identified as 24-year-old Shawndre Delmore, was found unresponsive during a routine check on August 31. Despite efforts from jail and hospital staff, he remained unresponsive and passed away on September 3.

This recent death adds to a series of similar incidents at the jail. From July 31 to August 26, four other inmates were found unresponsive in their cells and were later pronounced deceased. One of them, 34-year-old Samuel Lawrence, had recently filed a civil rights complaint alleging excessive force from deputies and other inmates.

The Atlanta Police Department is currently investigating both Lawrence’s and Delmore’s deaths. Delmore’s family expressed confusion and grief, stating that he had entered the jail in April as a healthy young man and his sudden death was unexpected.

The Fulton County jail system has faced scrutiny from the Department of Justice, which launched a civil investigation in July into alleged unsanitary conditions and severe violence at the facility. The investigation was prompted by the death of 35-year-old inmate LaShawn Thompson in September 2022, whose family claimed he had suffered from severe neglect and insect infestation.

Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat acknowledged the gravity of the violent incidents at the jail, attributing them to dangerous overcrowding and deteriorating infrastructure. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis emphasized the need for a larger and more humane facility to accommodate the growing demands of Atlanta and Fulton County.

It is worth noting that former President Donald Trump and 18 co-defendants were recently booked at the Fulton County Jail, although only one was held and released shortly after.

The series of inmate deaths and ongoing investigations have raised concerns about the safety and conditions within the Fulton County Jail, prompting calls for reform and improved facilities.
