HOUSTON – A shooting incident unfolded at Lakewood Church in Houston on Sunday afternoon, leaving authorities on high alert. According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the incident occurred in the 3700 block of the Southwest Freeway, where Lakewood Church is located. An initial statement from Lakewood Church confirmed an “active situation involving shots fired” at the premises. Sheriff Gonzalez later clarified on social media that the shooter had been neutralized, although it appears that deputies from other agencies were involved in firing their weapons.
Harris County Constable Alan Rosen revealed that a child, aged between 5 and 9, was also injured in the shooting. In response to the incident, Governor Greg Abbott reached out to Houston Mayor John Whitmire, offering the full support and resources of the state, including the Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers, to swiftly bring the perpetrator to justice. Governor Abbott expressed his condolences, stating, “Our hearts are with those impacted by today’s tragic shooting and the entire Lakewood Church community in Houston. Places of worship are sacred.”
The Houston Police Department has established a family reunification area in the Greenway Plaza vicinity. Lakewood Church, founded by Joel and Delores Osteen, is one of the largest congregations in the country, with an average weekly attendance of approximately 45,000 individuals, as stated on its website.
