Shohei Ohtani Speaks Out on Gambling Allegations Involving Former Interpreter

Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese baseball superstar, has addressed the ongoing investigation into the gambling allegations surrounding his former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. Mizuhara was recently charged with felony bank fraud after allegedly stealing $16 million from Ohtani to cover his gambling debts. Ohtani expressed his gratitude for the Department of Justice’s investigation but emphasized his desire to shift the focus back to baseball.

The incident came to light during the Dodgers’ opening series in Seoul, South Korea, in March, when Ohtani’s representatives revealed that he had fallen victim to a “massive theft.” Initially, it was reported that Mizuhara had stolen $4.5 million from Ohtani. However, federal prosecutors now allege that the former Dodgers interpreter stole over $16 million from the baseball star.

According to an affidavit, Mizuhara impersonated Ohtani to facilitate wire transfers to an alleged illegal bookmaker based in California. The affidavit also revealed that Mizuhara placed approximately 19,000 bets, resulting in winnings of $142 million and losses of $183 million. In a text message reviewed by investigators, Mizuhara admitted to the theft, stating, “Technically I did steal from him. It’s all over for me.”

Mizuhara appeared in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on Friday and was released on a $25,000 bond. As part of his release conditions, he is prohibited from gambling or visiting a casino and is not allowed to have any contact with Ohtani. Mizuhara has also surrendered his passport. Michael Freedman, Mizuhara’s attorney, expressed his client’s desire to take responsibility for his actions and seek treatment for his gambling addiction. Freedman stated that Mizuhara wishes to apologize to Ohtani, the Dodgers, Major League Baseball, and his family.

  1. Are you kidding me? This is absolutely disgusting! I can’t believe Shohei Ohtani is even associated with someone involved in gambling allegations. It’s a complete disgrace and tarnishes his reputation. How can we trust him as a role model for young athletes when he’s surrounded by such shady individuals? This whole situation reeks of dishonesty and corruption. I am beyond disappointed in Ohtani for not distancing himself from someone involved in such illegal activities. It’s a sad day for baseball fans

  2. Shohei Ohtani addressing the gambling allegations surrounding his former interpreter is like a captain steering his ship through treacherous waters. He knows that the investigation is a storm that could potentially damage his reputation and career. Just like a skilled captain, Ohtani must navigate through this difficult situation, making sure to stay focused on his game while also addressing the issue with transparency and integrity.
