Shohei Ohtani Returns to the U.S. Amidst Gambling Allegations Against Former Interpreter

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani has returned to the United States following a tumultuous week of gambling allegations involving his former interpreter and close friend, Ippei Mizuhara. Ohtani and his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, were spotted disembarking a plane in Los Angeles on Thursday night, after the team concluded its two-game season-opening series against the Padres in Seoul, South Korea.

The couple appeared to be accompanied by Will Ireton, the Dodgers’ manager of performance operations, who will temporarily serve as Ohtani’s interpreter, according to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. Ireton has been fulfilling the same role for new Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto this season.

The controversy surrounding Mizuhara erupted after Ohtani’s attorneys accused him of “massive theft.” It was reported that at least $4.5 million in wire transfers were sent from Ohtani’s bank account to a Southern California bookmaking operation currently under federal investigation. Ohtani’s spokesperson stated that the funds were transferred to cover Mizuhara’s debt.

However, after initially corroborating Mizuhara’s story, Ohtani’s camp later disavowed it. Lawyers representing Ohtani have accused Mizuhara of “massive theft” in a $4.5 million bombshell. Mizuhara, who had been with Ohtani since his time with the Los Angeles Angels, was terminated shortly after the Dodgers’ season opener against the Padres in Seoul.

Ohtani has yet to publicly address the situation, but his legal team is pushing for a law enforcement investigation alongside an ongoing IRS probe. Mizuhara denied any involvement in gambling on baseball, which is illegal in California and violates MLB rules.

The MLB is monitoring the situation and gathering information, but Ohtani is not currently facing discipline, according to an MLB official. The Dodgers have stated that they are aware of the media reports and are gathering information as well.
