Shangela, RuPaul’s Drag Race Alum, Faces Lawsuit Alleging Rape

RuPaul’s Drag Race alum and We’re Here co-host, Shangela, is being sued by a former production assistant who alleges rape. The lawsuit, filed by Daniel McGarrigle in Los Angeles Superior Court, claims that Shangela (real name Darius Jeremy “DJ” Pierce) raped him after a wrap party in February 2020. McGarrigle alleges that Shangela bought him multiple alcoholic drinks before inviting him to his hotel to help pack for a flight. According to the lawsuit, McGarrigle woke up to find Shangela committing or attempting to commit sex acts on him. The plaintiff claims he screamed “No!” but felt weak and fearful during the assault, which included penetration.

Shangela’s lawyers have denied the allegations and argued that all claims are barred by the statute of limitations in both California and Louisiana. In a statement, Shangela vehemently denied the accusations, calling them untrue and offensive. Buckingham Television, the production company for We’re Here, is also named as a defendant in the lawsuit, which includes allegations of sexual assault, gender violence, false imprisonment, sexual harassment, and failure to prevent sexual harassment.

An external investigation conducted by Buckingham Television concluded that there was insufficient evidence to support the allegations. McGarrigle, represented by Daniel Gilleon of Gilleon Law Firm, is seeking unspecified punitive damages, attorney’s fees, and other compensation.
