Robberies in New York City have seen a significant surge, according to recent police data. While other major crimes such as shootings and murders have decreased, robberies have risen by 5.6% in 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. The number of reported robberies has reached 5,522 as of May 5, up from 5,228. This increase has raised concerns among experts and law enforcement officials.
Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD sergeant and adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, has highlighted the low arrest rate for robberies. Only about 25% of robbery cases are solved, primarily due to victims’ inability to identify their attackers. Giacalone expressed his lack of surprise at the rise in robberies, attributing it to the fact that many perpetrators go unidentified and are subsequently released by district attorneys, creating an environment conducive to criminal activity.
Central Park has witnessed a recent spate of robberies, with three incidents occurring within a span of 27 hours. This has contributed to a staggering 350% increase in robberies in the park, rising from 4 to 18 as of the most recent available data on May 5. Additionally, the NYPD’s Midtown North Precinct, known for its high tourist activity, has experienced a nearly 50% surge in robberies, reaching 67 cases compared to 45 year-to-date.
One notable incident took place in Midtown, where a newsstand owner was brutally attacked by three masked individuals. The assailants assaulted the 67-year-old vendor, bashing his head, and stole lottery tickets and cash before fleeing the scene. In another incident in Brooklyn, three robbers targeted a 67-year-old man in a subway station, punching him in the face and forcibly taking his MetroCard and cell phone. The 66th Precinct, where this incident occurred, has seen a 39.3% increase in robberies this year compared to the previous year.
