Retail Workers Criticize Assembly Speaker Heastie’s Stance on Crime

A pair of brutally attacked retail workers in New York City have voiced their criticism against state Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie over his lenient approach towards violent criminals. Ramon Acevedo, a former grocery-store manager, and Lisbel Rodriguez Luna, a cashier, both expressed their discontent with Heastie’s stance, claiming that he is wrong and indifferent to the issue.

Acevedo, who was nearly killed in a hammer attack at a Gristedes supermarket in Chelsea in July 2020, condemned Heastie for refusing to support tougher penalties for those who target retail workers. He argued that the lack of consequences and deterrents has turned New York into one of the worst places for crime. Acevedo’s assailant, Oscar Apronti, had previously attempted shoplifting at the same store and was also accused of assaulting a worker at a nearby bodega.

Luna, who was assaulted by a deranged woman and her daughters at a Bronx supermarket in February 2021, echoed Acevedo’s sentiments. She emphasized the need for punishment for those who rob and attack others, stating that such individuals should be in jail. Luna’s father-in-law, Jesus Hernandez, criticized Heastie for favoring criminals and called for stronger action from the authorities.

These criticisms come after Heastie rejected Governor Kathy Hochul’s proposal to increase penalties for criminals who target retail workers. Hochul, in her budget, aimed to address the surge in retail thefts and enhance the consequences for offenders. Heastie, however, maintained his belief that raising penalties does not deter crime and suggested exploring alternative approaches to combat retail theft.

The latest crime statistics from the NYPD reveal a more than 6.5% increase in citywide retail thefts compared to the same period in 2023. John Catsimatidis, CEO of New York’s Gristedes supermarket chain, expressed bewilderment at Heastie’s remarks, emphasizing the rising costs of shoplifting and heightened security measures. He criticized the legislature for prioritizing the protection of criminals over hard-working retail employees, which he believes is driving people away from New York.

  1. It is disheartening to hear about the brutal attack on retail workers in New York City. It is even more concerning to learn that state Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie has been criticized for his lenient approach towards violent criminals. In my opinion, it is crucial for lawmakers to prioritize the safety and well-being of the public, including retail workers who often face the risk of such attacks. Leniency towards violent criminals not only undermines the justice system but also puts innocent individuals at risk. It is
