Resident Arrested for Attempted Murder of Maintenance Worker in Berkeley Apartment Complex

A resident of a multi-unit apartment building in Berkeley has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after shooting a maintenance worker whom he mistook for a burglar. The incident occurred on Monday at approximately 11:40 a.m. in the 2500 block of Hillegass Avenue, near the UC Berkeley campus. The 43-year-old suspect is currently held without bail at Santa Rita Jail.

According to authorities, the tenant contacted the police, claiming to have shot a burglar. Simultaneously, the victim, a maintenance worker, also called the police, reporting that he had been shot while performing maintenance duties in the suspect’s unit. Upon arrival, officers found the maintenance worker with a non life-threatening leg injury. He was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Investigation revealed that the maintenance worker had entered the apartment with a key after the tenant failed to respond to multiple attempts to gain entry. As the victim opened the apartment door, he encountered the suspect pointing a gun at him. The suspect fired a round towards the victim’s head, which struck the doorframe, causing wood particles to hit the victim’s face. The victim fled down the hallway, with the suspect pursuing him and firing another round, hitting the victim in the leg. The suspect then returned to his apartment and contacted the police.

The tenant was apprehended at the scene and positively identified as the suspect. He is scheduled to be arraigned in court on Wednesday.
