Registered Sex Offender Accused of Attacking Three People on Santa Monica Beach

Santa Monica Police have accused Jawann Garnett, a registered sex offender from Los Angeles County, of attacking three individuals on a beach in Santa Monica. The incident occurred on Monday morning, prompting swift police response and resulting in Garnett’s subsequent arrest. Garnett, 31, now faces charges of attempted murder, elder abuse, and assault on a bystander.

According to Lt. Erika Aklufi, a spokesperson for the Santa Monica Police, the first attack was reported at 9:41 a.m. when a 17-year-old girl was aggressively assaulted near lifeguard tower No. 13. The motive behind the attack remains unknown. A bystander in her 20s intervened and managed to subdue Garnett, but not before sustaining injuries herself, including a punch and a bitten ear.

After being momentarily deterred, Garnett turned his attention to a pair of seniors he spotted near the waterline. He allegedly attacked a 77-year-old woman, attempting to drag her into the ocean. Fortunately, police arrived at the scene and apprehended Garnett before he could carry out his intentions.

All three victims received immediate medical attention, with two being treated and released at the scene. The 17-year-old girl was transported to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Garnett, listed as a transient in the Santa Monica area, is registered as a sex offender on the state’s Megan’s Law database. Court documents reveal that he had previously pleaded no contest to an assault with intent to commit a sex crime. He had been released from prison earlier this month after serving less than a year.

  1. I’m curious to know what the author thinks about the issue of public safety and the management of registered sex offenders. Do they believe that enough is being done to prevent such incidents from happening? Are there any suggestions or solutions they would like to propose?

  2. I highly recommend using personal safety apps like “bSafe” or “Circle of 6” to ensure your safety when visiting public places like beaches. These apps allow you to alert your trusted contacts in case of an emergency and provide them with your location. They also have features like a fake call option or a distress signal that can help deter potential attackers. It’s always better to be prepared and have a safety net in place, especially when visiting unfamiliar areas. Stay safe!
