Local radio personality Lisa Lopez-Galvan, known for hosting KFFI’s “Taste of Tejano,” was tragically killed during a shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has left family and friends in mourning. Authorities confirmed Lopez-Galvan’s death in a news conference on Thursday, following an initial announcement by KFFI on social media.
Lopez-Galvan, 43 years old, had been a private DJ for over 15 years before joining KFFI in March 2022. Described as the “life of the party” by loved ones, she was known for her vibrant personality and dedication to her role as a mother.
The shooting also left 21 others wounded, including Lopez-Galvan’s adult son, who is expected to survive. Two juveniles have been charged in connection with the incident and are currently detained on gun-related and resisting arrest charges, as stated by a Jackson County family court.
The sudden loss of Lopez-Galvan has deeply affected her family, with her brother Beto Lopez expressing shock and disbelief. Childhood friends Rosa Izurieta and Martha Ramirez, who worked with Lopez-Galvan at a staffing company, described her as an extrovert and devoted mother. They revealed that she attended the parade with her husband and adult son, and was in high spirits throughout the event.
Among the victims, half were under the age of 16, with the youngest being just 8 years old, according to Dr. Stephanie Burrus of Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. While the hospital was prepared to handle such emergencies, Burrus emphasized that it is still distressing to witness numerous gunshot wounds.
Video footage captured the aftermath of the shooting, including the moment when a gunman was swiftly tackled to the ground. The heroic actions of Trey Filter and another individual were commended by law enforcement for their crucial role in subduing the suspect.
As the community grapples with the tragic events, support has poured in from various sources. Notably, singer Taylor Swift donated $100,000 to Lopez-Galvan’s family, offering her condolences.
