Polish Man Pleads Not Guilty to Punching Danish Prime Minister, Citing Intoxication

A Polish man, whose identity remains undisclosed due to legal restrictions, has entered a plea of not guilty in the trial for allegedly punching Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen. The accused, facing charges of violence against a public servant, as well as counts of indecent exposure and fraud in relation to other incidents, has admitted guilt to some of the additional charges. If convicted, he could face imprisonment and deportation.

The incident occurred in Copenhagen, just three weeks after Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was targeted in a serious assassination attempt. Prime Minister Frederiksen sustained minor injuries to her neck and shoulder during the assault. The 39-year-old Polish man, appearing in court, claimed that he was too intoxicated to recall the events leading up to his arrest. He stated, “I’m standing face to face with Mrs. Prime Minister, [then] I can’t remember anything else until I am arrested,” as quoted by AFP news agency.

Although Ms. Frederiksen was able to leave the scene unaided, she expressed being “shaken” by the incident but assured she was “fine.” Following the attack, she underwent a medical examination at a hospital and subsequently withdrew from the final day of campaigning for the European elections. While the prime minister will not testify in the trial, one of her bodyguards provided testimony, recounting that the accused approached Ms. Frederiksen on a busy street, uttered incomprehensible words, and delivered a forceful punch to her shoulder.

The incident took place during a political rally, and the man managed to get close enough to the politician to throw a punch. Thankfully, the politician’s security team reacted quickly and apprehended
