Tampa police and investigators from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducted a search of an Ybor City home on Tuesday. The search was prompted by information suggesting the presence of a buried body at the E. 5th Ave. residence.
The home is historically significant as the site of a gruesome quintuple murder committed by Victor Licata in 1933. Licata used an axe to kill his family, and the case was initially linked to marijuana use. However, subsequent research revealed that Licata suffered from severe mental health issues and was never prosecuted. No human remains were found during the search. Licata was committed to the Florida Hospital for the Insane in Chattahoochee and later moved to Florida State Prison before taking his own life in 1950.
