Police Hunt for Suspect in Flaming Container Attack on Manhattan Subway Platform

Police are actively searching for a suspect involved in a disturbing incident on a Manhattan subway platform last month. Surveillance footage, released by the NYPD on Wednesday, captured the moment when a man, believed to be around 35 years old, ignited two cans filled with flammable liquid inside the West 28th Street subway station. The incident occurred at approximately 7:40 p.m. on February 5.

According to authorities, the suspect proceeded to hurl one of the flaming containers towards a group of individuals on the southbound 1 train platform. Fortunately, the container missed its intended target, resulting in no reported injuries. The suspect swiftly fled the scene on foot, evading capture.

Described as approximately 6-feet tall with a slender build and brown eyes, the suspect was last seen wearing a gray hoodie, along with black jacket, pants, and sandals. The NYPD is urging anyone with information regarding the suspect’s identity or whereabouts to come forward.

This attempted arson incident is part of a recent surge in criminal activity within New York City’s transit system since the start of 2024. In response to the escalating situation, Governor Kathy Hochul has deployed over 700 members of the National Guard and state police to conduct controversial bag checks.
