Patrick Mahomes Sr. Arrested for DWI with Open Beer in Vehicle

Patrick Mahomes Sr., father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes Jr., was arrested for driving while intoxicated (DWI) in Smith County, Texas. According to an affidavit obtained from the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, Mahomes Sr. was pulled over shortly before 8 p.m. on Saturday night with an open 16-ounce Coors beer in the center console of his vehicle.

This is not the first time Mahomes Sr. has faced such charges. Records indicate that he has been cited for DWI in 2008 and 2019 as well. When questioned by the police, Mahomes Sr. admitted to having consumed a few beers while watching a game at a local bar.

During the arrest, Mahomes Sr. agreed to perform Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which reportedly indicated his intoxication. The arresting officer noted that Mahomes Sr. displayed several clues of impairment during the tests, including nystagmus eye movement, difficulty walking in a straight line, and maintaining balance on one leg.

The traffic stop was initiated after Mahomes Sr.’s vehicle was observed driving slower than the surrounding traffic during a routine patrol. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle’s registration had expired in 2022.

The timing of this incident is unfortunate, as Patrick Mahomes Jr. is set to face the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 2024 on Sunday. The younger Mahomes, a two-time MVP, is expected to address the media at the annual Super Bowl Opening Night press conference. However, the attention on him may now shift away from football as he responds to his father’s actions.

It is worth noting that NFL players, including Mahomes Jr., are prohibited from promoting alcoholic beverages. However, Mahomes Jr. previously appeared in a Coors television commercial promoting a bear-shaped golf club cover, with proceeds going to charity through his foundation, the Mahomies Foundation.

While this incident involving Patrick Mahomes Sr. is certainly newsworthy, it is important to separate the actions of the father from the accomplishments of the son. As the Super Bowl approaches, the focus should remain on the game itself and the talented athletes competing on the field.
