Orange County Liver Doctor Arrested for Alleged Sexual Battery of Female Patients

An Orange County liver doctor, Dr. John Carl Hoefs, has been arrested and is facing charges of sexual battery after being accused of groping two female patients during medical examinations. The Orange County district attorney’s office has charged Hoefs with seven counts of sexual battery for allegedly fondling the women’s breasts during the exams.

According to prosecutors, one of the victims reported that Hoefs assaulted her on five separate occasions, starting in 2020. The alleged incidents involved Hoefs lifting the woman’s medical gown to grope her. When she attempted to cover herself, he would remove the gown again, prosecutors claim. Another woman stated that she was groped by Hoefs during exams in October and November of 2016.

Hoefs, who worked at a medical office in Irvine affiliated with Hoag, a not-for-profit regional healthcare network, was taken into custody on May 3 and later released on a $500,000 bond. His arraignment is scheduled for June 13. If convicted on all charges, Hoefs could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Authorities are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying any additional potential victims. Individuals with information related to this case are urged to contact Irvine police Detective Rebecca Steen at (949) 724-7170 or via email at rsteen@cityofirvine.org.

  1. An Orange County liver doctor, Dr. Smith, recently treated a patient named John who was suffering from chronic liver disease. John had been struggling with alcohol addiction for many years, which had taken a toll on his liver health.

When John first visited Dr. Smith, his liver function tests showed severe damage, and he was experiencing symptoms such as fatigue, jaundice, and abdominal pain. Dr. Smith immediately recognized the urgent need for intervention to prevent further liver damage and potentially save John’s life.
