Opening arguments were presented on Monday in the criminal trial of former President Donald Trump, who stands accused of orchestrating a hush-money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016. Prosecutors delivered a strong case, alleging that Trump was involved in a criminal conspiracy and committed election fraud.
Prosecutor Michael Colangelo, in his opening statement, directly implicated Trump in the $130,000 payment made to Daniels by Trump’s fixer, Michael Cohen. Colangelo argued that the payment was an unreported campaign expenditure aimed at suppressing negative stories about Trump before the 2016 election. He further claimed that Trump doubled the reimbursement payment to Cohen to disguise it as business income, highlighting Trump’s intention to hide the payment and interfere with the election.
The prosecution also hinted at the forthcoming testimony of David Pecker, the former head of the National Enquirer, who allegedly played a significant role in Trump and Cohen’s efforts to suppress damaging stories about Trump. Colangelo emphasized that Trump’s willingness to pay more than necessary demonstrated his true nature and intention to interfere with the election.
Trump’s defense attorney, Tood Blanche, countered the prosecution’s claims, arguing that Trump’s payments to Cohen were legitimate and that attempting to influence an election is a normal part of democracy. Blanche also sought to undermine the credibility of Cohen, a key witness for the prosecution, by highlighting his criminal history.
The trial, which began last week in Manhattan Criminal Court, has been marked by Trump’s complaints and attempts to delay proceedings. Trump has been accused of intimidating prospective jurors through his social media posts and in-court behavior. Judge Juan Merchan admonished Trump for muttering commentary during jury selection and called a hearing to determine if Trump should be held in contempt of court for violating a gag order.
