Oklahoma State Head Coach Mike Gundy Clarifies Comments on Player’s DUI Arrest

Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy has clarified his comments regarding running back Ollie Gordon II’s recent DUI arrest. Gordon, 20, was arrested on June 30 and is facing multiple charges, including DUI under 21 years of age, after recording a blood alcohol level of .11.

During Big 12 media days in Las Vegas, Gundy initially stated that Gordon would not be suspended and would continue playing this season. He mentioned that if any punishment were to be given, it would be making Gordon carry the ball 50 times in the first game. However, Gundy later clarified his statement, emphasizing that he did not excuse Gordon’s actions but wanted to do what he believed was best for the player.

In a live interview with ESPN, Gundy’s phrasing seemed to imply that he himself had driven under the influence numerous times in the past. He stated, “I thought I probably done that a thousand times in my life, which is fine. So, I got lucky. People get lucky.” Gundy later took to social media to clarify his words, stating that his intended point was that everyone makes bad decisions at times and it was not a reference to anything specific.

Gordon, who apologized for his actions on social media and during the media appearance, was not suspended for any games. Gundy explained that he wanted to be fair to the team. The arrest occurred when Gordon was pulled over for speeding at 82 mph in a 65-mph zone, and empty bottles of vodka and tequila were allegedly found in his vehicle.

Gundy and Gordon are scheduled to meet after the conclusion of media days. Gordon, coming off an impressive sophomore year, rushed for 1,732 yards and received the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s top running back.
