Ohio Man Pleads Guilty to Stabbing Step-Mother, Shot by Police During Arrest

Joshua Amburgy, who was facing charges for stabbing his step-mother to death in 2022, has pleaded guilty, according to court documents. The incident occurred in a house on Valencia Drive in Miami Township, Ohio. Last November, Miami Township officers shot Joshua after he murdered Melissa Amburgy. Police reported that Joshua fled the crime scene but was later found at a different house on Geneva Court.

Body camera footage from Miami Township police showed officers encountering Joshua in the backyard of a residence. In the video, Joshua can be seen holding a butcher knife above his head and running towards the officers. Despite attempts to use a Taser, one officer fired two rounds from his gun, with one hitting Joshua.

Joshua was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Miami Township Police Chief Mike Mills stated that Joshua is known to the police and has previously assaulted officers in other departments. Initially charged with attempted murder of a peace officer and felonious assault, Joshua pleaded guilty to aggravated murder in court on Monday. The charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison without parole. Joshua is scheduled to be sentenced on November 21.
