Officer Hospitalized After Crashing Patrol SUV During Pursuit of Armed Burglary Suspects

An officer from the Hayward Police Department was hospitalized on Wednesday after crashing a patrol SUV while pursuing suspects involved in an armed burglary in the city’s industrial area. The officer’s injuries were reported as non-life-threatening, according to police spokesperson Ofcr. Cassondra Fovel. The suspects managed to escape the scene.

The incident unfolded around 5:35 a.m. when the officer responded to a burglary in progress at a building located in the 2500 block of W. Winton Avenue. Upon arrival, the officer witnessed several individuals armed with guns entering the premises. The specific nature of the business was not disclosed by the authorities, citing an ongoing investigation.

As the suspects fled, the officer pursued one of the vehicles. However, during the pursuit, the officer crashed in the 21000 block of Cabot Boulevard, causing significant damage to the patrol SUV and shearing a fire hydrant in the process. The resulting water flow flooded the surrounding area. The police did not provide a description of the suspect’s vehicle.

Fire crews were promptly dispatched to the scene to address the aftermath of the damaged fire hydrant. Further details regarding the incident were not immediately available.
