Officer Fatally Shot During Arrest in Iowa; Suspect in Custody

33-year-old Algona police officer, Kevin Cram, was fatally shot while attempting to make an arrest on Wednesday night, as confirmed by the Iowa Department of Public Safety. Cram, a dedicated officer with a decade of service in law enforcement, encountered the suspect, 43-year-old Kyle Ricke, while on patrol duty, acting on an active harassment warrant issued from Palo Alto County.

Upon locating Ricke, the situation escalated and resulted in Cram being shot and later pronounced dead at Kossuth Regional Health Center. The incident, which took place at around 8 p.m. in Algona, involved Ricke hurling profanities at the officer post-shooting, as noted in the criminal complaint.

The suspect, who was previously charged with harassment in August and had a history of multiple arrests, was apprehended near Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, shortly before midnight on Thursday. Ricke now faces first-degree murder charges in Kossuth County and is awaiting extradition. Officer Cram had been with the Algona Police Department since 2015, following a two-year stint at the Nora Springs Police Department.
