Northwestern State-Nicholls State Game Canceled after Player’s Tragic Shooting Death

The upcoming college football game between Northwestern State and Nicholls State has been canceled in light of the shooting death of Northwestern State defensive back Ronnie Caldwell. Caldwell, aged 21, was found fatally shot in Natchitoches, Louisiana early Thursday, according to WVUE-TV.

Head coach Brad Laird mourned the loss, highlighting Caldwell’s influence within the team, even though an injury had prevented him from playing this season. “Ronnie was our voice in the locker room. His voice resonated with every team member,” Laird stated, emphasizing the profound impact of Caldwell’s presence.

In addition to the game cancellation, Nicholls State President Marcus D. Jones announced the discontinuation of the Family Day festivities typically associated with the game.

Before joining Northwestern State in 2022, Caldwell had transferred from Tyler Junior College. In the previous season, he had participated in all 11 games, starting in 10. The circumstances surrounding his shooting remain under investigation.
