The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has announced a reward of $20,000 for any information leading to the identification and conviction of the individual responsible for the tragic killing of a juvenile bottlenose dolphin. The lifeless dolphin was discovered on West Mae’s Beach in Cameron Parish, Louisiana on March 14.
Following the discovery, NOAA’s stranding network partner, Audubon Aquarium Rescue, promptly retrieved the dolphin and transported it to the Audubon Nature Institute in New Orleans for further examination. The subsequent necropsy revealed a distressing truth – the dolphin had suffered a cruel fate. Multiple bullets were found lodged in its brain, spinal cord, and heart, leading to the conclusion that the trauma occurred at or near the time of death.
The Office of Law Enforcement at NOAA has taken charge of the investigation into this heinous act. In an effort to bring the perpetrator to justice, the agency is offering a substantial reward for any information that can aid in the arrest and conviction of the individual responsible. Additionally, a civil penalty may be imposed on the offender.
It is important to note that the Marine Mammal Protection Act strictly prohibits any form of harassment, harm, killing, or feeding of wild dolphins. Violators of this law may face severe consequences, including fines of up to $100,000 and imprisonment.
The incident has sparked outrage among animal welfare advocates and the local community, who are appalled by the senseless act of violence against a defenseless creature. The NOAA’s reward serves as a reminder that such acts will not go unpunished, and the agency is committed to ensuring the protection of marine life.
